The Alvares family finally escape to freedom from the Portuguese Inquisition and persecution when they settle in London in 1704. Avram Alvares finds success when his talents are recognised by an eminent Jewish financier, to whom he becomes Comptroller, and is richly remunerated. Avram's son, Joseph, becomes a successful lawyer but the family suffers torment when Joseph’s six-year-old son, Isaac, is snatched from outside of his house, but unknown to the family is transported to the American Colonies to live fourteen years as a slave. Meanwhile the Alvares family suffer further torment, threats and attacks from the grandsons of the Bishop and Chief Inquisitor of the Portuguese city in which the family lived fifty years earlier. The brothers seek revenge for causing the defrocking of their grandfather and the Alvares escape from the Inquisition. Isaac eventually has his freedom from slavery purchased by a wealthy anti-slavery activist. He eventually settles in the Colonies, becoming a successful property developer and businessman in the rapidly developing city of New York. The story tells of the family's torment and how they resolve their problems with some surprising conclusions.
